An Insider’s Guide to Artist Colonies & Residencies
Art Print Training
PCA encourages teachers and parents to use fine art prints to enhance learning in elementary schools and other classrooms. Virginia’s Standards of Learning are used to correlate the prints with relevant subject matter in the classroom.
Training for volunteers is held each fall in partnership with other community groups. Past partners have included the University of Virginia Art Museum and PERKs, “Partners in Enrichment Resources for Kids.”
PERKs, “Partners in Enrichment Resources for Kids,” offers free demonstration workshops on using art prints in the schools to expand critical thinking skills, visual and cultural literacy and fun with art. These workshops will be held in the individual schools for art print volunteers using their selected art prints in relation to class curriculum.
Janis Chevalier, who chaired the PCA Arts in Education Art Print Program and was a UVA Art Museum docent for 24 years, and Jane Anne Young, who was Director of Education at the UVA Art Museum since 1982, will design and conduct these demonstrations. During the past two years PERKs has developed a monthly program with every grade in Clark Elementary School incorporating SOL material in individually planned discussions of iconic art images. The PERKs approach is inquiry-based enabling the students to analyze and discover the art for themselves.
Parents and volunteers who wish to reserve a workshop or to start an art print program in their school are urged to contact PERKs by calling Jane Anne Young at (434) 295-0385.
Arts Education Workshops
Each year, Piedmont Council for the Arts coordinates visual arts education workshops for educators in partnership with Second Street Gallery that are free and open to the public.
In February 2011, May 2012, May 2013, and March 2014 PCA and Second Street Gallery paired with the Office of Statewide Partnerships of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond to offer a free information-packed training session for area arts educators.
Previous educator workshop topics have included documentary photography, myth and metamorphosis in African American art, film noir, and more.
Law & The Arts Seminars
Law & The Arts is a series of seminars co-sponsored by Piedmont Council for the Arts and the Virginia Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division – Lawyers for the Arts Committee with support from the Virginia Commission for the Arts. The purpose is to assist artists in navigating the legal processes for arts-related issues. Past topics have included copyright law, trademark law, business incorporation, contracts, and more.
Admission is $5 for PCA Members ($10 for non-members). Pizza and beverages will be provided. Advance registration is required. To register, please email info@charlottesvillearts.org.

The Creative Conversation Series
Since Fall 2008, PCA’s Creative Conversation Series has provided a community forum for discussion on topics of importance to the arts community. With participation from more than 150 people, the six Creative Conversations to date have addressed issues including arts education practices, marketing Charlottesville as a creative community and a cultural destination, and improving access to the arts for all community members. The insights, ideas, questions and concerns brought forth as a result have been a guiding force for PCA.
