Arts Career Mentoring

In fall 2008, PCA will launch an arts career mentoring series for girls in grades 6-12 entitled Working Women in the Arts (WWA). The program, coordinated in partnership with the Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Council, will offer a series of hands-on workshops connecting girl scouts with female arts professionals in our community. WWA mentors may be dancers, commercial gallery owners, graphic designers, nonprofit arts managers, music promoters, poets, and more.

Working Women in the Arts will share the many exciting paths women take to build successful careers in the arts. Workshops will be held once every 3-4 months, leading up to the year 2010.

PCA Internship Program

Idil Tumer, PCA's 2008 Summer Intern

PCA provides on-the-job training to college and university students interested in pursuing careers in arts administration. From event promotion to database administration, intern projects are challenging hands-on experiences. Interns work closely with PCA staff to develop goals and objectives for their work in the office. As representatives of PCA in the community at large, our interns become advocates for the importance of the arts in everyday life and help PCA build relationships with an increasingly diverse constituency. Learn more about volunteer opportunities at PCA.

Partner Programs

Working in partnership with other groups, PCA offers additional programs and projects for young people in the Charlottesville area:

Virginia Festival of the Book

Anna Alter, 2007.

Each year, PCA volunteers organize several events for the Virginia Festival of the Book geared towards youth and families, artists, and citizens with disabilities. Past events have explored topics such as memoirs, storytelling through quilts, and children’s book illustrations. Events are organized in partnership with local entities such as WorkSource Enterprises, ARC of the Piedmont, Post High, Charlottesville Parks and Recreation, Region Ten, and Service Dogs of Virginia.

FUN BUS Unveiling. Photo by Kate Daughdrill.

This summer PCA wroked on an exciting public art project with The UVA School of Architecture, The Bridge | Progressive Arts Initiative, and Charlottesville Parks and Recreation. Working with a team of local artists and architects, PCA and the Bridge coordinated the painting of a school bus that is now being used to transport young people to and from Charlottesville Parks and Recreation programs. Young campers at Parks and Recreation’s 2008 summer camp were important contributors to the design and painting process. Look out for the newly painted Parks and Rec bus driving around town this fall!
