The Nourish(meant) Project!

The Nourish(meant) Project is art in action. Artists and activists Graham Evans and Emily Nelson are retrofitting a 14-passenger school bus to run on waste vegetable oil, installing a kitchen inside, and building a garden on top. The adventure will grow as they travel around the Northeast and Midwest growing and cooking food for people.
As they meet, feed, and build relationships, they will begin a series of conversations about how to grow your own food, the importance of local and regional food systems, and general sustainability practices. In addition to this, they will teach those who are interested about biofuels, seed banking, and the many other topics they expect to learn about on the voyage. Nourish(meant) will function as a traveling art and education center geared toward addressing hunger and food insecurity in this country at the personal, community, and regional scales.

The Nourish(meant) Project is happening in the summer of 2009 and, with luck, beyond. Departure is set at early July, while Graham and Emily spend June retrofitting the bus in Charlottesville. They’ll travel from Virginia through the Northeast to the Midwest, following a backroads route, stopping in towns large and small along the way. From Wisconsin, the project will head down through Illinois, Ohio, and West Virginia back to Virginia.
