Starting Thursday June 14, through Saturday June 16, Piedmont Virginia Community College will host its 12th Annual Juneteenth Celebration. Juneteenth consists of a series of events that are FREE and open to the community. Since its start in 1865, Juneteenth is one of the oldest known annual events celebrating heritage and the end of slavery in Virginia.
On Thursday June 14 at 6:00pm in the Charlottesville City Council Chambers, Hari Jones, (an assistant director and curator of the African-American Civil War Memorial Freedom Foundation and Museum), is scheduled to give a talk titled The Glorious March to Liberty: From Virginia to Texas.
On Friday, June 15, Juneteenth events will feature Tribute to the Ancestors with drumming, music, and spoken word performances starting at 5:30pm in the amphitheater behind the V. Earle Dickinson Building on PVCC’s campus. Afterward, the Lesole Dance Project from South Africa will perform in the Main Stage Theater. A public reception will immediately follow the performance.
We’ll be writing more about Saturday’s Juneteenth celebrations in our (free) biweekly newsletter, The Arts In Your Inbox. Subscribe here! Please e-mail or visit the PVCC website for more information about all the Juneteenth Events.
