The fourth outing sponsored by the Arts Access Project took place on Saturday, November 7th, 2009 at the historic Paramount Theater on the downtown mall. Over 60 Friendship Court and Southwood neighborhoods attended the Virginia Film Festival screening of The Little Mermaid and More Than A Game, the true story of LeBron James’ rise to NBA stardom, using free vouchers distributed by PCA. Other highlights were free snacks provided by Whole Foods, face painting, a green screen, and special appearances by UVa basketball players.
Participation at this outing grew from two successful dinners promoting the event in the Friendship Court and Southwood neighborhoods. At the Urban Vision Community Center at Friendship Court, Arts Access sponsored its first ever Cookout for the Arts. Free barbeque was served, along with clips from the upcoming films, and arts and crafts for the kids. At the Southwood Community Center, Arts Access staff and volunteers attended a community potluck and created excitement for the upcoming outing.
A Friendship Court resident, Frank Brown, who attended the outing with his sons, liked the film More Than A Game so much that said he wished he could get a copy of it. Through a donation from the Virginia Film Festival, Arts Access was able to fulfill his wish!
The Arts Access Project looks forward to an equally successful outing THIS SATURDAY at the McGuffey Art Center where attendees can explore artist studios, watch dance performances, and make their own holiday art.
