Lee Alter, Watercolor Artist, Teacher and Art Therapist
Lee Alter is an institution in Charlottesville. She came to Charlottesville in 1973 from Boston to help establish a yoga community here. From the one course she ever took in watercolor at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts it became clear that watercolor was to be her medium. As Lee says, “Painting is a joyous expression of who I am….bringing up images from the unconscious and giving them place… My aim is to make a contribution of beauty and peace in the world, an energetic that can be felt and transmitted to the viewer.”
She has used art as a vehicle for therapy with children and in 1992 spurred by a dream, she started to teach watercolor to both children and adults. You can see her beautiful work on flyers all over town with her class offerings and her own art work is exhibited in a number of restaurants. She is literally her very own form of “Art in Place.” Her next show is a collaborative effort that involves music and light, which will take place June 10th at Random Row Books from 7 – 10 pm.
