PCA Celebrates Women in the Arts: Kate Tamarkin

Kate Tamarkin, Musician & Music Director

Kate Tamarkin is the Music Director of the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra and the Interim Chair of the McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia.

Described by Leonard Bernstein as “extremely musical, a vivid personality and a strong performer, Ms. Tamarkin has enjoyed a conducting career that has taken her from Shanghai to St. Louis, from Monterey to Moldova. Yet her international “star power” has not diminished her special interest in teaching young musicians. Last summer she taught at the Leipzig International Music Academy. She has also been a regular faculty member at the South Carolina Conductors Institute, an intensive summer conducting program.

As Music Director of the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra, Ms. Tamarkin conducts a seventy-member ensemble comprised of UVa music faculty, student musicians and community members. With patience, humor and consummate skill, she leads the orchestra to new musical heights that often take players by surprise and that inspire audiences to come back for more.

In rare moments of free time, she is fulfilling her dream of studying the harp and using it to create a healing environment in health care settings.
