Meet Eemahni, PCA's High School Summer Intern

Hello, I’m Eemahni Cooper, the High School Summer Intern at Piedmont Council for the Arts. I’ve been helping around the office for the past two weeks, and the experience has been phenomenal.
I’m entering my senior year at the Visual and Performing Arts Academy of Salem High School in Virginia Beach. My main interest is theatre, but I’ve also studied photography and dance. I’m currently serving as Secretary of the Senior Theatre Club.
This experience has been my first encounter with the world of non-profit arts organizations. I never really understood their purpose. However, as the days went on, I leaned more and more about PCA’s mission and the missions other arts councils around the country. It’s made me become more appreciative of the arts here in Charlottesville. I wish we had programs like this in the Hampton Roads area where I go to school. It’s like no one really “cares” about us artists nowadays. They think it isn’t challenging, like art is just an easy way out. But it isn’t. We do this because it’s our way of communicating our feelings, emotions, and beliefs to the rest of the world.
Overall, I’ve had a great time working with PCA. I honestly wish I could stay longer. From the knowledge I’ve gained in these two weeks, I plan to work with a non-profit arts organization in the future.
