VSA Art Show at CitySpace Gallery

PCA is excited to co-present the second annual VSA Art Show, a collaborative exhibit in the CitySpace Gallery with VSACharlottesville/Albemarle for July and August.

VSA Charlottesville/Albemarle was formed in 2000 as a district of Virginia VSA arts (formerly Very Special Arts). VSA, an affiliate of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, is dedicated to promoting the creative power in people with disabilities.

Through a wide range of programming, the organization encourages community members to build confidence through creative expression.

The exhibit will include an information panel about the VSA organization, as well as artwork from member organizations and individuals that include: Olivia Alderson, Sarah Grover, Joan Bullard, the Post High School program, Region Ten Community Services Board, WorkSource Enterprises, The Enrichment Alliance, Norm and Chris Carter, Building Bridges, The Alzheimer’s Association and the Jefferson Area Board for Aging (JABA).

There will be a First Fridays opening reception from 5:30-7:00pm on Friday, July 11 at CitySpace. This event is FREE and open to the public.

The exhibit will remain on display through Friday, August 29. There will also be an exhibit by local artist Marilyn Roselius on display inside the PCA office within CitySpace, based on Open Play! photos by JJ Cohoon.

CitySpace is open to the public Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm. CitySpace is located at 100 5th Street NE on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville.

PCA Seeks Executive Director

Piedmont Council for the Arts (PCA), the designated arts agency of Charlottesville City and Albemarle County, seeks an Executive Director.

The mission of PCA, a non-profit organization, is to sustain the thriving presence of the arts in the Charlottesville/Albemarle area. PCA provides support services to artists, arts organizations, and their audiences.

The Executive Director is responsible for the achievement of the organization’s mission, goals, and financial objectives. Job responsibilities include:

Program Development and Administration:
1. Work with the PCA Board of Directors and staff to develop and maintain a long-range strategy and work plan that achieves the organization’s mission, goals, and financial objectives.
2. Provide leadership for the PCA Board of Directors; facilitate the work of the Board and its committees.
3. Provide leadership for implementation of Create Charlottesville: A Cultural Plan for Charlottesville/Albemarle.
4. Provide leadership for program development; carry out plans and policies authorized by the Board.
5. Maintain current knowledge of literature, practice, and developments in the areas of non-profit arts organizations and arts administration.

Personnel Management:
1. Recruit, hire, and supervise paid staff members as authorized by the Board.
2. Develop and maintain current job descriptions for staff members; conduct performance reviews.
3. Maintain a work climate that attracts, retains, and motivates highly qualified staff members.
4. Promote the use of volunteers in the work of PCA; provide supervision for the volunteer workforce.
5. Plan for the education and development of staff members and volunteers; assist them in relating their specialized work to the mission and goals of the organization.

Budget and Finance:
1. Work with the staff, Board Treasurer, and Finance/Development Committee to prepare an annual budget; ensure that the organization works within the parameters of the budget.
2. Develop and maintain sound financial practices.
3. Develop and manage fundraising campaigns and events, government and private grants, corporate giving, and membership growth to secure adequate funds.
4. Work with the Events Committee to coordinate event planning, marketing, auction donations, and implementation of the annual Spring For The Arts fundraiser.
5. Work with designated Board officers to execute legal documents.

1. Maintain a strong relationship with the Board; provide information and prepare reports.
2. Meet as requested with the Board President, bi-monthly with the Board of Directors, and as needed with Board committees.
3. Establish working relationships and cooperative arrangements with artists, arts and cultural organizations, community organizations, and others.
4. Represent and publicize the mission, goals, programs, and activities of PCA as well as the arts in Charlottesville/Albemarle to agencies, organizations, educational institutions, businesses, and the general public.
5. Liaise with city, county, and state government officials, agencies, and regional arts organizations in accordance with the mission of PCA. 
6. Serve as the principal spokesperson for PCA’s programs, activities, and events.

1. Develop, lead, and coordinate arts advocacy initiatives on local, state, and national levels; serve as a central resource for information on relevant issues involving the arts.
2. Establish, maintain, and cultivate strong relationships with donors, foundations, corporations, businesses, and others to enhance PCA’s visibility, position, and credibility within the community.
3. Serve as the central resource for networking with other arts agencies statewide through participation in such organizations as the Virginia Alliance of Local Arts Agencies, Virginians for the Arts, and the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
4. Work with the Events Committee to produce the annual Rising Stars Awards Celebration honoring local student artists for exemplary performance and engagement.

1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required. A Master’s degree in an arts-related field is preferred.
2. Management experience is required. Management experience in an arts-related organization is preferred.
3. Experience in budget development and oversight is required. Financial and fundraising acumen is preferred.
4. A record of success in working with a board, a staff, a community, and supporters of an organization is preferred.
5. Exemplary oral and written communication skills are required; the ability to build productive relationships with diverse groups and individuals also is required.
6. Computer skills that include comfort with Mac operating systems, Microsoft Office and Excel, QuickBooks, FileMaker Pro, and Google products are preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:
1. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
2. Compensation includes health/dental benefits and paid annual vacation.

Join PCA for the next Art Drinks at Crozet Pizza at Buddhist Biker Baron Wednesday, July 9 from 5:30-7:30pm!

Art Drinks is a monthly casual networking event where you can mingle with other arts enthusiasts and creative professionals in Charlottesville. This event is FREE and open to the public.

Plus, you might win exciting raffle prizes, including a signature broadside from the Virginia Art of the Book Center, tickets to the opening night of Ash Lawn Opera’s production of Susannah, tickets to the Heritage Theatre Festival’s production of Avenue Q, and tickets to see Against Me at The Southern on July 25.

The giveaway is free to enter and the drawing takes place at 6:30pm, with community arts announcements welcome from anyone in the crowd to follow immediately afterward.

Welcome to the Arts Engagement Blog Series!

This series highlights volunteer opportunities for community members with a love of the arts. Each post in the series will correspond to one of the goals in Create Charlottesville/Albemarle: A Cultural Plan. The cultural plan is a comprehensive study of the local arts and culture sector that affirmed community value for the arts, took stock of local arts and culture assets, and identified need areas to focus attention and resources.

As this is the inaugural post in the series, we will begin by highlighting a local organization whose work accomplishes Goal One of the Create Charlottesville/Albemarle cultural plan: Diversity & Inclusion.

For this week’s post, we spoke to Sarah Blech, the woman behind VSACharlottesville Albemarle. Formerly known as Very Special Artists, the VSACharlottesville/Albemarle committee meets quarterly to promote experiences in the arts for individuals with disabilities. The committee works closely with VSA Arts of Virginia, part of a national program that creates partnerships to promote the arts.

Describe the mission of VSA Charlottesville/Albemarle and how it promotes Diversity & Inclusion.
Four principles guide VSA programs and affiliates:
1. Every young person with a disability deserves access to high quality arts learning experiences.
2. All artists in schools and art educators should be prepared to include students with disabilities in their instruction.
3. All children, youth, and adults with disabilities should have complete access to cultural facilities and activities.
4. All individuals with disabilities who aspire to careers in the arts should have the opportunity to develop appropriate skills.

What volunteer opportunities are there for community members who wish to get involved with VSACharlottesville/Albemarle?
The VSA Charlottesville/Albemarle advisory committee is open to individuals with or without disabilities who are interested in the arts, disabilities, education, or community engagement. We are looking at long range planning and growth and welcome members of the community with experience and energy to join us!

This FREE directory lists arts programs offered for K-12 school groups by artists and arts groups in the community. The handbook serves as a resource for teachers and administrators in area schools by providing information about arts opportunities for school groups to take advantage of during the academic year. Some listings offer specific dates of arts performances, while others describe free school tours that can be scheduled, and still others explain learning experiences that artists can provide in schools.

Fractured Atlas Membership

PCA members are eligible for a free Associate Membership with Fractured Atlas. Fractured Atlas is a national non-profit arts service organization that provides a wide range of support to the arts community, including insurance; discounts on everything from art supplies to Zipcar; software for tickets or contacts; Fractured U. educational resources for artists; and assistance with international artist visas.

As a service to PCA members, Jessica Thayer offers a half-hour complimentary phone consultation to artists who wish to find new and positive ways to engage with the world, redefine success from the inside out, or get to the root of self-destructive choices or behavior.
